British duo, Wayward have enjoyed a compelling 2018 establishing themselves as respected producers with a trio of celebrated EP’s including their 12” debuts on both Fort Romeau’s Cin Cin Records and Australian based label Beats Of No Nation. They open 2019 with a return to the rapidly ascending Silver Bear Recordings. This time around, they perk up with the stunning Raval EP written whilst living between Barcelona and London throughout the summer. Featuring two originals from the London duo as well as remixes from woman-of-the-moment Nightwave, plus Shall Not Fade and Phonica Records affiliate, Earth Trax.
Getting us underway is the succinct house tropes of the title track ‘Raval’. A rough and club ready cut, featuring crisp, rolling drum grooves, elevated by floating synths and catchy reverbed vocals. The flip is the contrasting ‘Tables Have Turned’, expanding on the pair’s repertoire of soulful dance floor efforts, this track is full of fluttering synths, percussive nuances and 303 synth lines alongside grooving, warm drum breaks and demonstrates their depth of musicality and just how far they’ve grown as producers.
Nightwave’s dextrous remix of ‘Raval’ injects the original with garage-indebted vocals and scatted bass lines offering a darker, UK centric entry to the package. It serves up further proof of a talent who is surely set for a landmark 2019. Earth Trax completes the EP, taking ‘Raval’ into a slower acid-laced jam, full of squelchy bass lines, cut up vocals and pads that ends the EP in momentous fashion.
The last year has seen the duo garner huge support for their music-making prowess. From Mixmag to DJ Mag, Les Yeux Orange and DHA their success has transcended onto the radio waves too with support internationally from Giles Peterson, BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, KCRW, Beats In Space, Rinse FM and NTS.
Silver Bear Recordings has expanded into a full time operation releasing 12”s on a quarterly basis building on the star studded list of remixers and collaborators to date which have included; Hammer, Man Power, Brame & Hamo, Folamour, Big Miz, Pepe, Krywald & Farer & Kincaid. After Louf releasing the debut 12” for the label to praise from Andrew Weatherall, Kornel Kovaks & Satoshi Tomiie and a host of new signings yet to be announced. Watch this space.
